The Friends of Brill Common are a group of people, many of whom are Brill inhabitants and some with long village associations, who are concerned over the Common’s changing state.
Our aim is to ensure that the unique site of Brill Common is retained as a valuable asset to the village and the wider community by conserving its grassland and enhancing its environmental qualities.
Brill Common is not only a significant landmark within the Village but is also found in the emotional heart of those who care about maintaining the fundamental character of this magnificent piece of the County that is in our care.
In 1997 the last hefted herd of sheep ceased grazing Brill Common, a sight that many miss and look back on with a great deal of nostalgia. However time has moved on and there has been steady encroachment of brambles and scrub on to the Common’s grasslands. Left unmanaged this will succeed to wild woodland and the inevitable decline of flora and fauna species, to say nothing of the visual loss of the Common as we knew it.
In 2007 new Government Legislation relating to Common Lands and the responsibilities of their owners and managers (NERC ACT2006*) was 'phased in' together with the new Commons Act (2006).
These combined factors suggested that it was an ideal time to form the ‘Friends Of Brill Common’ whereby our collective views could be expressed, hopefully considered and acted upon.
It is with this outlook that the FOBC wish to support the Parish Council in their Management of the Common. We encourage them to maximize the professional assistance and advice available, through grants and Government schemes, as well as utilising the enormous amount of goodwill that already exists in the community.
